Ingredients used in Butter Chicken: To make butter chicken, you have to first marinate it, for which you need roasted chicken, tomato puree, cream and spices. Non-veg eaters like this dish very much, it is often prepared in parties. If you want, you can try it at home also.

Ingredients of Butter Chicken

  • 400 grams raw chicken

Ingredients for preparing marinade:

  1. 2 tsp red chilli powder
  2. 2 tsp ginger and garlic paste
  3. 2 tsp salt
  4. 2 tsp lemon juice
  5. Curd
  6. 1/2 tsp garam masala
  7. 1 tsp kasuri methi
  8. 2 tsp mustard oil

For gravy:

  1. 2 tsp oil
  2. cubes of butter as per taste
  3. 3 grams cloves
  4. 1 cinnamon stick, chopped
  5. 1 tsp mace
  6. 7 cardamom
  7. 4 tomatoes
  8. 1 tsp garlic

How to make Butter Chicken

To prepare marination:

  • Grind raw chicken in a bowl and add salt, red chilli powder, ginger garlic paste and lemon juice to it. Mix it well.
  • Keep it in the refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Now add salt to it. After this add salt, ginger garlic paste, red chilli powder, garam masala, kasuri methi and mustard oil. Mix it well and keep it in the refrigerator again for an hour.
  • Roast the marinated chicken in the oven until three-quarters cooked through, 30 minutes.

To prepare gravy:

  • Heat butter with 2 tsp oil in a pan.
  • Add cloves, cinnamon stick, mace and cardamom in it. Fry it and add tomato, garlic and ginger to it. Mix it well and grind it well.
  • In another pan, put two cubes of butter, add ginger and garlic paste in it.
  • Now add tomato puree in it. Now add red chilli powder, Kasuri methi, honey and roasted chicken pieces. Cook it on low flame.
  • Add green chilli, cardamom powder and cream to it and mix well.
  • Add cream on it and serve.

Recipe notes : 


If you want, while serving butter chicken, you can also garnish it with cream and green chillies.

For a vegetarian version of butter chicken, you can use paneer instead of chicken. Paneer can be prepared in the same manner by marinating it for 5 to 6 hours and then roasting it.
